History of Archetypes:
Archetypes go back as far as Plato who talked about them as forms; forms that were reflected in material objects.
Then the psychologist Carl Jung took a journey with archetypes and he beleived that there are as many archetypes as there are typical situations in life. When a situation occurs which corresponds to a given archetype, that archetype becomes activated and a compulsiveness appears, which like an instinctual drive, gains it's way against all reason and will, or else produces conflict of pathological dimensions, a neurosis. Archetypes provide certain forms; dreams identify archetypes; active imagination identify archetypes; archetypes can be found in paranoiacs, the fantasies observed in trance-states and the dreams of early childhood, from 3rd to 5th year; past life regression can be helpful here also. Jung believed archetypes to be a real force charged with a specific energy, therefore it is not the human being making the statement, but the archetype speaking through him/her. Jung believed that if these statements and archetypes are ignored, then what follows can be symptoms of psychic troubles, such as neurotic symptoms or collective delusions. Archetypal statements are based upon instinctive preconditions and have nothing to do with reason; they are neither rationally grounded nor can they be banished by rational arguments. Archetypes also over power the ego.
Jung took it further to say that archetypes are in the collective unconscious and comprised of psychological patterns derived from certain roles in life such as Mother, Child, Trickster and King, as well as universal events or situations including initiation, death or rebirth. Jung believed that there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal and impersonal nature that is identical in all individuals. This collective unconscious, he believed, was inherited rather then developed and was composed of mainly archetypes.
Jung proposed that the totality of the human psyche breaks down into 3 categories:
1) the personal consciousness
2) the personal unconscious
3) the collective unconscious
Jung realized that instinctual behaviour implies archetypal patterns and in turn that archetypes/instincts were formless until actualized in someone's life - brought to consciousness. He believed everything merges into consciousness out of the unconscious - therefore bringing archetypes into our conscious transforms one being. He also showed that creativity of the unconscious can be clearly seen in hypnotic work. He believed that archetypes in its un-projected state had no exact determinable form but is in itself an indefinite structure which can assume definite forms only in projection. For example all animals beyond a certain level of complexity appear to have an archetype for Mother.
